Penelope's Labour. Weavings Words and Images
EXTERNAL EVENT

Fondazione Giorgio Cini in Venice is hosting the exhibition “Penelope's Labour: Weaving Words and Images” from June 4 to September 18, 2011. Curated by Adam Lowe and Jerry Brotton, the exhibition was planned and organized by Fondazione Giorgio Cini and Factum Arte studio in Madrid. The event showcases a dialogue between antique and modern tapestries and carpets, bringing together Vittorio Cini’s great interest in tapestries with contemporary art, and the renewed ability to use this medium to describe the reality we live in.

The exhibition aims to bring back “woven images” to the heart of contemporary art, and includes some of the most important examples of antique tapestries (some belonging to the collections of Fondazione Giorgio Cini) as well as textile works by Azra Aksamija, Lara Baladi, Alighiero Boetti, Manuel Franquelo, Carlos Garaicoa, Craigie Horsfield, Simon Peers & Nicholas Godley, Grayson Perry and Marc Quinn.

Gallery Moshe Tabibnia contributed to this project by providing scientific and technical support for the display of a 16th century Feuille de choux tapestry and two wonderful period carpets. These two rugs, a “damask” from the early 16th century, and a Persian rug from the early Safavid period (mid-16th century), were on display at Gallery Moshe Tabibnia during the exhibition “Milestones in the History of Carpet” held in October 2006.
