An Enduring Motif: The Pomegranate in Textiles
The pomegranate originating in Persia and later spreading to all of the Mediterranean and Asia, has been perceived as a symbol of health, fertility and resurrection in many cultures. Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, the Jewish, Christians, Muslims and Buddhists view it as a symbol of abundance and prosperity.
This exhibition presents a cross-section of textiles from different origins and time periods that feature this richly symbolic fruit, one of the most commonly found designs in ancient textiles because of its positive and often regal associations.
